How to Wash Workout Clothes Without Ruining Them

Athletic wear requires a different washing approach than everyday cotton clothing. Synthetic fabrics like polyester, spandex, nylon, and performance blends are engineered to wick moisture and move with your body, but they are also more sensitive to heat, certain detergents, and washing habits that work fine on regular clothes. Washing workout clothes incorrectly leads to stretched-out waistbands, degraded fabric, and persistent odors that never fully come out.

The most common mistake people make with athletic wear is washing it inside out. Turning workout clothes inside out before washing ensures that the side of the fabric that collects the most sweat, bacteria, and body oils gets the most direct contact with water and detergent. This significantly improves odor removal and extends the life of the outer surface of the fabric, which is often where color and texture live.

Heat is the enemy of synthetic fabrics. Polyester and spandex can lose their elasticity and shape when exposed to high heat, and moisture-wicking properties can be permanently degraded. Always wash athletic wear in cold water and use the lowest heat dryer setting — or better yet, air dry on a flat surface or drying rack. The performance benefits of high-tech athletic fabric come from its structure, and heat breaks down that structure over time.

Mesh bags are highly recommended for athletic wear, especially for items with loose elastic bands, straps, or delicate construction. A mesh laundry bag protects athletic gear from snagging on zippers and buttons from other items in the wash, reduces stretching during the agitation cycle, and keeps small items together so nothing gets lost.

Odor is the biggest complaint about workout clothes, and it often comes from bacteria and body oils trapped in the synthetic fabric weave. Regular detergent may not fully address this. Sport-specific detergents like WIN Sport or Hex Performance are formulated to penetrate synthetic fibers and eliminate bacteria more effectively. White vinegar added to the rinse cycle (about half a cup) is a natural and effective odor neutralizer that does not damage synthetic fabric.

Fabric softener should never be used on moisture-wicking athletic wear. Fabric softener coats fabric fibers with a waxy residue that blocks the tiny pores engineered into moisture-wicking materials. Over time, regular fabric softener use on athletic wear makes it less breathable and significantly reduces its ability to pull sweat away from your skin. Skip the fabric softener entirely for synthetic athletic fabrics.

The frequency of washing athletic wear matters. Workout clothes should be washed after every single use without exception. Sweat, bacteria, and body oils left in synthetic fabric begin to break down the material and create odors that become progressively harder to remove with each wash cycle you skip. Never let sweaty workout clothes sit in a gym bag for days before washing.

Compression garments — leggings, compression shorts, and base layers — are particularly susceptible to losing their compression properties if washed incorrectly. These items should be washed in cold water on a gentle cycle and air dried flat. Avoid wringing them out, which can stretch the elastic fibers. Hanging compression garments to dry can also cause uneven stretching from the weight of the wet fabric.

Bras and sports bras deserve special attention. Underwire and structured support elements can be damaged in a regular wash cycle. Use a mesh laundry bag, cold water, and a gentle cycle for sports bras. Avoid the dryer entirely for structured sports bras — air dry them flat to preserve the shape and elastic support. Hooks and clasps should be fastened before washing to prevent snagging other items.
