How Often Should You Actually Wash Your Clothes?

Laundry frequency is one of those topics where most people operate on habit rather than actual guidance. Some people wash jeans after every wear, others go months without washing them. Neither extreme is necessarily right. The correct washing frequency depends on the garment, how it was worn, and how much sweat or soil it absorbed. Over-washing damages fabric prematurely. Under-washing allows bacteria and oils to degrade fabric fibers and create hygiene concerns.

Underwear and socks should be washed after every single wear without exception. These items are in direct contact with skin throughout the day and collect sweat, bacteria, and oils that create hygiene issues and odor even if not visually soiled. There is no situation in which wearing unwashed underwear twice is appropriate. The same applies to socks — they absorb significant moisture and bacteria from feet throughout a day of wear.

T-shirts and light cotton tops that are worn directly against skin — no undershirt — should be washed after every one to two wears. A shirt worn for a full workday of moderate activity has absorbed sweat and body oils that will begin to degrade the fabric and create odors if not washed promptly. Shirts worn in hot weather or during physical activity should always be washed after a single wear.

Dress shirts worn over an undershirt can go two to three wears before washing if they were worn in an air-conditioned office environment. The undershirt acts as a barrier that absorbs the bulk of sweat and body oil before it reaches the dress shirt. Button-downs worn without an undershirt should follow the same guideline as t-shirts — wash after every one to two wears.

Jeans are famously over-washed by most people. Denim is a heavy fabric that does not need frequent washing, and washing denim too often accelerates fading and degrades the fabric. Jeans worn for casual daily activities can typically go five to ten wears between washes. If you notice odor or visible soil, wash sooner. If the jeans still look and smell clean after five wears, you can stretch it further. The Levi's CEO famously said he never washes his jeans — while that is an extreme position, it illustrates how durable properly cared-for denim is.

Bras require different treatment than most clothing items. Because they touch skin but are not typically drenched in sweat during normal daily wear, bras can go two to three wears between washes. However, bras worn during exercise or in hot weather should be washed after every wear. Over-washing bras stretches the elastic and underwire construction and reduces their lifespan. Hand washing in cold water is gentler than machine washing for bras.

Sweaters and outer layers like cardigans and fleece that are worn over other clothing items can typically go three to five wears between washes. The base layer underneath acts as a barrier. Heavy sweaters and wool items should be washed even less frequently — as discussed in our cashmere and wool care guide, these fabrics have natural antimicrobial properties and washing too often accelerates wear.

Towels should be washed every three to four uses. After that point, the accumulation of dead skin cells, moisture, and bacteria creates a hygiene concern even if the towel looks clean. In humid bathroom environments, towels also carry risk of mildew growth if not washed and dried thoroughly at regular intervals. Gym towels should be washed after every single use.

Bed sheets and pillowcases should be washed weekly. We spend seven to eight hours in contact with our bedding every night, shedding skin cells and secreting oils and sweat throughout. Weekly washing prevents the accumulation that creates skin problems and dust mite growth. Duvet covers and bed skirts can go two to four weeks between washes since they have less direct skin contact.
